The swimming Pigs of Staniel Cay, Bahamas

Posted by

We are at Staniel Cay, a hotspot of the Exumas in the Bahamas. Next to Staniel Cay, on the other side of our anchorage is Big Major Cay. This uninhabited island boasts one of the Bahamas’ biggest tourist attractions, the swimming pigs. I am skeptical. Swimming pigs? It’s all just a resourceful marketing ploy to lure more tourists to the island. And if you grew up in the countryside, like I did, you’ve seen a pig before.

But now that we’re here, we take the dinghy to see them anyway. As soon as we approach the beach some pigs are already swimming towards us. This looks really funny.

My concerns have evaporated. Enthusiastically, I concentrate on feeding one of the pigs the toast we pocketed at the last minute. The pig strains quite a bit to make sure it gets all the food available

After everything is fed, I go to the beach to take a closer look at the piggy goings-on.

The little piglets are especially cute.

However, the other 50% of the escape crew do not like this spectacle at all. The skipper stays in the dinghy. He waits patiently until I have photographed the pigs from all perspectives and am ready to return.
